Mike Stout is an assistant professor of Sociology. He completed his B.A. in sociology from Temple University in 2000, his M.A. in sociology from Penn State University in 2003, and his PhD in sociology from Penn State University in December of 2007. He joined Missouri State’s Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Criminology in the Fall of 2007.
Mike’s research interests are in the area of social capital and civic engagement. His doctoral dissertation examined social trust and how it relates social action, the diffusion of civic resources through social networks, and the effectiveness of community organizations in facilitating civic engagement and political participation. Recently, Mike and two other sociologists (John Harms and Tim Knapp) from Missouri State conducted a survey on social capital and civic engagement in Springfield and Greene County, MO.
Mike has also conducted research on the developmental foundations of social trust, the prevention of school violence, adolescent health beliefs, and the transmission of social capital from parents to their children. His work has been published in The Journal of Educational Psychology, The American Journal of Education, The Journal of Social Issues, and The Journal of Research on Adolescence.
Mike’s teaching interests are in the areas of quantitative research methods, political sociology, and race and ethnicity. He has taught Soc 150 (Introduction to Society), Soc 302 (Statistics for Social Research), Soc 336 (Race and Ethnic Relations), and Soc 498 (Senior Seminar).
